How to Remove Washi Tape Without Damaging Journal Paper

Washi tape is usually low-tack, but thin journal paper can still lift or tear if tape is pulled quickly or at a steep angle. The safest method is slow, supported removal—and a small test before you commit to a full page.

Test first, especially on thin paper

Try a short strip on an inconspicuous corner or a spare page from the same notebook. Paper coating, age, ink, and how long the tape has been in place all affect removal. If the test disturbs fibres, leave the decoration in place or trim around it rather than forcing it.

Lift the tape slowly

  1. Lay the page flat on a clean, dry surface.
  2. Hold the paper close to the tape edge with one hand.
  3. Start at a corner and fold the tape back over itself.
  4. Pull nearly parallel to the page, slowly, pausing if the paper starts to rise.

Do not yank upward. Avoid water, oils, solvents, or heat on a finished journal page: they can spread ink, stain paper, or create more damage than the tape.

If adhesive remains

Do not rub aggressively or scrape with a blade. On valuable or very delicate pages, stop and cover the small residue with a label or a new collage layer only if that suits the page. A test on scrap paper is safer than experimenting directly over writing.

For future layouts, use shorter tabs and keep tape away from fragile edges. The Soft Candy Diary Pearlescent Washi Tape Set (3 Rolls) is one option for borders and removable-looking accents; always test any tape on your own paper first. Browse the Stickers & Washi Tapes collection.

FAQ

Can I use a hair dryer to loosen washi tape?

We do not recommend heat on journal paper; it may affect inks, coatings, or adhesives. Slow low-angle lifting is safer.

Will washi tape always come off cleanly?

No. Results vary by paper and time in place, so test first and do not promise damage-free removal.
